For Round 4 of Building Virtual Worlds at the Entertainment Technology Center, my team was tasked with Story Round, so we took inspiration from some popular movies and made a game about escaping an encampment. Our twist: the player assists a kid in escaping by gesturing to him.
The strongest asset of our world is the atmosphere, so we wanted to sell it through the backing music, the lighting (which uses volumetric lights), and a crafted interest curve for more intensity on the tail end of the story.
- Adapted a volumetric lighting asset to be usable on the Oculus Rift.
- Utilized avatar masks and multiple animation layers to achieve the correct behavior from the kid.
- Implemented a responsive interaction system between the player and the kid for gestures and handing off items.
- Designed and implemented an auto-aim throwing mechanic that mimics the throw's path with an added curve.
